Manuel Guerrero Aviña Given Suspended Sentence in Qatar

Manuel Guerrero Aviña, a 44-year-old British-Mexican man, has been sentenced to six months in prison, suspended, after being arrested in Qatar. His arrest occurred in February during what his family describes as a “honeytrap operation” on the gay dating app Grindr. He was found guilty of possessing an illegal substance and fined £2,100.

Guerrero Aviña’s family claims the drugs were planted in his apartment, and he believes the sting was orchestrated because of his sexual orientation. Human rights organization FairSquare criticized the trial, calling it a “travesty of justice,” but Qatari officials maintain the arrest was solely related to drug offenses.

Following the verdict, Guerrero Aviña will be deported from Qatar.
