In a significant breakthrough, Manipur police commandos successfully apprehended Thangjam Thoungamba Meitei, a wanted militant and active member of the UNLF, on Monday. The 26-year-old Meitei had been on the run for two weeks, following his alleged involvement in the brutal killing of Laishram Malemnganba Meitei, a 19-year-old student.
The arrest came after a surge in search operations by the Manipur government to capture the fugitive. Acting on valuable tips provided by local residents, the police conducted a special operation and were able to arrest Meitei at Tiger Camp, Sagolmang, in the Imphal East district.
Meitei, the son of Th. Sunil Meitei, is suspected to have carried out the daylight killing of Laishram Malemnganba Meitei, a student from Moirang Kampu. The victim’s body was discovered near his house on February 10, 2025, shocking the community. In response to the crime, the Manipur government declared Meitei and another accused, Huiningsubam Yumlingba, alias Poireinganba, as wanted fugitives.
While Meitei is now in custody, Poireinganba, the son of H. Ibohanbi from Sagolmang, remains at large. Authorities have confirmed that every effort is being made to apprehend him and ensure that justice is served.
The brutal murder of Laishram Malemnganba has sparked widespread outrage, prompting authorities to initiate an extensive manhunt. With one suspect now arrested, the focus is on bringing the second suspect to justice.
