Two individuals were arrested in Manipur’s Churachandpur district after Assam Rifles busted a major drug smuggling syndicate and seized illegal contraband worth approximately Rs 62 crore.
The operation, based on credible intelligence about drugs being smuggled from Myanmar to Mata village, led to the arrest of Chingsen (36) and L Pausuanlal Simte (38), both residents of Churachandpur.
On Wednesday night, an Assam Rifles team set up a mobile vehicle checkpoint at Mata village. Early Thursday morning, a Fortuner car with a Uttar Pradesh registration was stopped. During the search, the two suspects admitted to carrying banned items, including brown sugar and Yaba tablets.
The Assam Rifles recovered 208 soap cases containing brown sugar valued at Rs 12 crore, about two lakh Yaba tablets worth Rs 50 crore, Rs 3.37 lakh in cash, four smartphones with six Indian SIM cards, one Myanmarese SIM card, and the Fortuner car.
The seized contraband and arrested individuals were handed over to the Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation.
