Officers from Cheshire Police have arrested a 69-year-old man in London in connection with allegations of fraud involving a campaign that was set up following the 1984 murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher. The officer, who was 25 at the time of her death, was fatally shot while on duty outside the Libyan Embassy in London. Despite an ongoing investigation by the Metropolitan Police, no one has been convicted for her murder.
In July 2024, the Met Police received reports of financial irregularities related to a campaign aimed at bringing justice for WPC Fletcher’s death. To avoid any conflict of interest, the case was transferred to Cheshire Police. On Wednesday, December 4, officers executed a search warrant at an address in the Mill Hill area of London and arrested the man on suspicion of fraud.
The man has been released under investigation while further enquiries are conducted. Cheshire Police have urged anyone who may have donated to the campaign to contact them. They emphasized that this investigation is unrelated to the Fletcher family or the official Police Memorial Trust charity.
Authorities are calling on individuals who may have contributed to the campaign for justice for WPC Yvonne Fletcher to visit the Public Portal or contact Cheshire Police on 101, quoting Operation Dielectric, with any relevant information.
