Malaysian Monk Arrested for Theft at Chiang Mai Temple, Found in Chiang Rai

Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai — A 50-year-old Malaysian monk, identified as Paramasivan, has been arrested in northern Thailand after being connected to a theft at Chiang Mai’s Jed Yod Temple.

The investigation began when authorities at Chang Phueak Police Station in Chiang Mai received reports of missing valuables from the temple. It was soon discovered that a foreign monk, who had been residing at the temple, had disappeared after the theft, prompting an arrest warrant to be issued by a Chiang Mai court.

During a routine patrol in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, Thai immigration officers noticed a monk who matched the description of the suspect. After being approached and questioned, Paramasivan admitted to being the individual wanted in connection with the theft. He was subsequently disrobed and taken into custody by Thai police to face charges of theft in a dwelling.

The arrest took place near Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong in Chiang Saen, where Paramasivan was found. He is now under investigation and awaiting legal proceedings in accordance with Thai law.
