Madison Man Alex Stubbs Sentenced to 14 Months for Counterfeit Bills

Alex Stubbs, 27, was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to using counterfeit money. Stubbs and his co-defendant, Cornelius Stewart, were involved in a scheme using fake $100 bills to make small purchases, enabling them to receive legitimate change.

Between July and November 2023, the pair used counterfeit bills over three dozen times, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Stubbs would use the counterfeit money to buy inexpensive items and pocket the change in real currency. Stewart, who was accused of creating the counterfeit bills, pleaded guilty on Monday and is scheduled for sentencing on February 27, 2025.

The investigation involved multiple agencies from Madison, Fitchburg, Sun Prairie, Marshall, and Verona.
