Madhya Pradesh Developer Arrested for Duping Australian Investor

In a significant case of cyber fraud, Mayank Saluja, a web developer from Green Park Colony in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding an Australian citizen of Rs 1 crore (approximately 1.77 lakh Australian Dollars). The incident was reported to the state’s cyber cell following a complaint lodged by the victim on May 9, 2023.

Saluja reportedly exploited the victim’s interest in developing video conferencing software. After the Australian citizen reached out to him through a website, he encountered numerous fabricated obstacles, which Saluja claimed were technical issues related to running the application on Apple’s web browser. He manipulated the situation by requesting additional funds for code modifications to ensure compatibility with various Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

The deception escalated as Saluja persuaded the complainant to invest in a fictitious partnership with Apple, promising shares that were never delivered. He further solicited funds for the formation of a non-governmental organization (NGO) that he falsely claimed was necessary for the project.

Realizing he was being scammed, the victim filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the cyber cell. Saluja attempted to secure anticipatory bail; however, his request was denied by the court. Initially, the cyber cell faced challenges locating him, as he had moved from his previous residence. Nevertheless, diligent investigation led to his apprehension at his new home in Indore.

Further investigation revealed that Saluja had convinced the complainant to purchase a website domain, which he subsequently seized control of, effectively locking the victim out of his own website’s management. The cyber cell has since reached out to both Apple and Skype to verify Saluja’s claims and gather additional information.

This incident underscores the importance of conducting thorough research and selecting reputable developers before making financial commitments. Key steps include verifying credentials, checking online reviews, and clearly defining project scopes and payment terms in written contracts to avoid falling prey to similar scams.
