Madan Lal Arrested in Rs 4.33 Lakh Scam Involving IIT Delhi Student

The Cyber Cell of the Delhi Police has arrested Madan Lal, a 29-year-old man from Rajasthan, in connection with a fraud that defrauded an IIT Delhi student of Rs4.33 lakh. The arrest follows a complaint lodged at the Cyber Police Station in Southwest Delhi.

The scam began on November 16, 2024, when the victim, a fourth-year student at IIT Delhi, received a call from someone pretending to be from DHL Courier Services. The caller falsely claimed that a parcel under the student’s name was being sent from Mumbai to Beijing and warned of illegal activity. The fraudster pressured the student, convincing him that police were investigating him for criminal involvement.

Further manipulation led the student to believe that he had to make multiple money transfers to avoid arrest. By November 18, the victim had transferred a total of Rs4.33 lakh via UPI.

A case was filed with the Cyber Police Station, and after tracking the fraudulent transactions, the police identified Madan Lal as the person withdrawing the stolen money from ATMs in Lohawat, Rajasthan. Following surveillance and further investigation, the police traced him to Chennai, where he was arrested on January 18.

This scam, involving impersonation of law enforcement and DHL services, highlights the growing threat of online fraud. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to look into other individuals linked to the fraud.
