A woman from Dakhina Thiri Township, Myanmar, identified as Ma Aye Aye Aung, has been arrested for allegedly scamming individuals who sought to purchase counterfeit banknotes through a fraudulent Facebook account.
Aye Aye Aung, who operated under the online alias “Amara Pan,” posted advertisements on various social media groups, claiming to sell fake currency. Her scam promised buyers eight counterfeit banknotes for every real one, with payment arrangements tailored to the buyer’s location. Buyers were directed to transfer money via Wave Pay into Aye Aye Aung’s account, and once the payment was made, she would block the buyers’ contacts and disappear with their funds.
Authorities tracked down the scammer and arrested her on November 24 at her home in Zee Phyu Kone Village. During the arrest, a mobile phone used to facilitate the scam was seized.
The case has been filed under Section 66(c) of the Telecommunications Act, and authorities have vowed to continue their investigation. They are working to apprehend others involved in the production, sale, or purchase of counterfeit currency through social media platforms.
