Lockhart Man Arrested After Attempting to Steal Police Vehicle in Lakeway

LAKEWAY, Texas — Dakota Kennedy, 21, of Lockhart, was arrested in Lakeway on January 4, 2025, after allegedly attempting to steal a police vehicle while officers were investigating a stolen car.

The incident began when Lakeway police received a license plate reader alert for a vehicle that had been reported as stolen. Officers tracked the vehicle to the 400 block of Fantail Loop, where they found it parked and unoccupied.

To monitor the situation, officers positioned an unmarked vehicle nearby to keep watch on the stolen car. During surveillance, they observed a man leaving a residence near the vehicle. Instead of heading toward the stolen car, the suspect approached the police vehicle and attempted to open the door, likely trying to steal it.

When the suspect, later identified as Dakota Kennedy, saw the officers inside, he fled the scene on foot. Police quickly apprehended him and found drugs and a key to the stolen car in his possession.

Kennedy now faces multiple charges, including unauthorized use of a vehicle, engaging in organized criminal activity, possession of a controlled substance, and evading arrest. He was taken into custody and is expected to face court proceedings soon.
