Livonia Police Arrest Man for Stealing Mail After Chase, Found Hiding in Dumpster

LIVONIA, MI – Livonia Police released video footage on Sunday showing the dramatic moment they arrested a man accused of stealing mail after finding him hiding in a dumpster last month.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Al-Qaadir Walik-Rasool from New Haven, Michigan, has been charged with fleeing and eluding police, obstructing or resisting arrest, and five counts of mail theft. Walik-Rasool was arraigned on January 24, 2025.

According to police, the thefts took place between January 21 and 22, 2025. Officers were canvassing a subdivision in search of surveillance footage when they noticed a black Chevy Malibu matching the description provided by witnesses. As officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled the scene but lost control of the vehicle and ran on foot.

A short time later, Walik-Rasool was found hiding in a nearby dumpster. He was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.

Walik-Rasool is scheduled for a court appearance on February 27, 2025, where he will face the charges. Livonia police continue to investigate the incident, and further updates may follow.
