Levita Ferrer Admits to $657K State Dept. Embezzlement

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A former U.S. State Department budget analyst has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $657,000 over a two-year period, the Department of Justice announced.

Levita Almuete Ferrer, 64, of Maryland — also known as Levita Brezovic — admitted to stealing $657,347.50 from the federal government between March 2022 and April 2024.

Ferrer abused her signature authority over a departmental checking account, redirecting funds for personal use. She concealed the theft by manipulating entries in QuickBooks, assigning herself as the payee and later modifying records to appear as legitimate transactions with real State Department vendors, according to prosecutors.

She pleaded guilty to theft of government property, a felony that carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Ferrer has agreed to repay the full amount in restitution and is also subject to a forfeiture money judgment in the same sum.

Her sentencing is scheduled for September 18.
