Lawrence Newell Arrested After Police Chase in Boardman

Police apprehend suspect linked to credit card theft and fraud

by Amelia Crawford

A man involved in a case of credit card theft and identity fraud was arrested following a police chase in Boardman on Monday night.

The incident began when officers responded to a call at Best Buy in Boardman after a man reported fraudulent charges on his credit card totaling almost $1,000. The bank had already canceled the card, but the items had been collected from multiple retailers via curbside pickup, except for one location.

After speaking with a Best Buy employee who delivered the stolen items, officers learned that the suspect was a Black male in his mid-20s with curly hair, possibly dreadlocks. His vehicle was described as a newer model four-door SUV with a silver strip along the bottom and top near the windows.

At a nearby Target store, an employee was alerted to notify police if the suspect showed up. When he did, police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, leading to a brief chase. The pursuit ended at the intersection of Boardman-Poland Road and South Avenue near McAlister’s Deli.

The suspect was later identified as 25-year-old Lawrence Newell, who was taken into custody.
