Latanya Verbal Arrested in Pinehurst Elder Fraud Case

On May 29, the Pinehurst Police Department launched a fraud investigation after reports surfaced that a resident had fallen victim to a scam. Detectives learned that the suspect had allegedly defrauded the victim of a significant amount of money over time.

Following an extensive investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Latanya Verbal, a 53-year-old contract mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. Using her position of trust, Verbal is accused of obtaining over half a million dollars from the victim, according to a press release from the Pinehurst Police Department.

On August 9, Verbal was arrested and charged with one count of exploitation of an elder and 31 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. She is currently being held at the Moore County Detention Center under a secured bond of $25,000.

“Our detectives are relentless in their pursuit of those who would take advantage of our seniors,” stated Police Chief Glen Webb. “I am proud of the challenging work they do.”

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Pinehurst Police Department at 910-295-3141 or the anonymous tip line at 910-420-1654.
