Chika Stanley Okoh, a Lagos resident, was convicted and sentenced by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi for his involvement in internet fraud. Okoh posed as an actor on Facebook to deceive individuals and gain financial advantage.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Okoh in December 2024 with a single offense related to cybercrime. He used a fake Facebook account to impersonate an actor, intending to exploit his online persona for fraud. The charge was brought under Section 22(3) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition etc.) Act, 2015.
Okoh admitted his guilt in court. The prosecution then called an EFCC investigator, Damilare Adeosun, who detailed the investigation. According to Adeosun, the EFCC acted on intelligence and carried out a sting operation in November 2024 at Lekki County Estate in Lagos, where Okoh was arrested. Okoh confessed to impersonating an individual named Jonathan and facilitating fraudulent transactions, for which he earned a commission. He acknowledged receiving N2 million, which he used to purchase an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
During the investigation, forensic analysis of the recovered phone revealed fraudulent documents. Okoh also provided a manager’s cheque of N1 million as part of the restitution process.
The court found Okoh guilty and sentenced him to 18 months in prison or a fine of N1,000,000. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.
