Kimberlee Singler, a 36-year-old woman from Colorado, has been arrested in the UK and faces extradition to the United States for allegedly murdering her two children in December 2023. The charges also include the attempted murder of her 11-year-old daughter, who survived the attack.
Singler’s attorney, Edward Fitzgerald KC, argued in a London courtroom that her extradition would violate the European Convention of Human Rights. He stated that Singler would not be eligible for parole if convicted in the U.S., a stance that is “alien” to UK law, where life sentences with no parole are rare.
On December 19, 2023, Colorado authorities discovered the bodies of Singler’s 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son after responding to a reported burglary at her home. Police later found the surviving 11-year-old daughter with serious injuries. Investigators uncovered evidence at the scene, including a blood-stained knife, spent rounds, and bottles of sleeping pills, raising suspicions about the nature of the crime.
Fitzgerald’s argument stresses that Singler could eventually receive clemency if sentenced to life without parole in the U.S., while such a sentence would be unheard of in the UK. The decision on whether Singler will be extradited is expected to be made on January 24, 2024.
Authorities say the killings were part of a violent custody dispute with her estranged husband, which allegedly motivated the tragic events.
