WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Amber Kaye Morrison, a 36-year-old Killeen woman, remains in the McLennan County Jail after being arrested on Wednesday for impersonating a Houston attorney with the same name. Morrison, who was named in a sealed indictment in July 2023, faces a third-degree felony charge for falsely holding herself out as a lawyer.
Morrison, who had already been sentenced to 15 months in jail on similar charges in Bell County, was transferred from the Bell County Jail to McLennan County Jail on Wednesday. According to court documents, Morrison’s arrest stems from an investigation by the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, which contacted Houston attorney Amber Morrison. The attorney confirmed that the defendant had been repeatedly using her professional identity to impersonate her.
At a July 2023 bond hearing in Bell County, the licensed attorney testified that she had received numerous reports of someone pretending to be her. This led to a notice being posted on the State Bar of Texas website to warn the public about the identity theft.
The complaint also reveals that Morrison is known by multiple aliases, including Amber Johnson and Amber Krypczyk. Investigators were alerted in June 2023 when a McLennan County woman reported that someone claiming to be the attorney had contacted her son to represent him in a family law matter. The woman and her son allegedly paid Morrison $1,700 for her legal services.
After her arrest, the indictment against Morrison, which had been sealed prior to her arrest, was unsealed. She remains in jail with a $5,000 bond.
