Kiesha Brown, a former postal worker in Norfolk, Virginia, has pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail matter, admitting to stealing mail to support her child and drug habit. Brown, 32, worked as a city carrier assistant at the L.C. Page Post Office in Norfolk before her arrest in October 2023.
Authorities began investigating mail theft and check fraud complaints in June 2023, eventually identifying Brown as a suspect by February 2024. Undercover cameras installed in her postal vehicle captured her engaging in drug use and rummaging through stolen mail. Brown later confessed to stealing mail and handing it off to an accomplice.
In her interview with investigators, Brown revealed that she had hidden 29 pieces of mail in her jacket, which she handed over to agents. One of the stolen checks had been altered from $146 to $4,800. Additionally, a business owner reported 16 stolen checks, and other customers on her route complained of similar fraudulent activities.
The Office of the Inspector General, which investigates postal employee misconduct, found a significant rise in cases of mail theft. From October 2023 to March 2024, 193 arrests were made, many of which involved postal workers.
Brown, who worked for the postal service for seven years, has her next hearing scheduled for April. Attempts to contact her or her attorney were unsuccessful.
