Kerala Police Capture Man Who Stole Gold 18 Years Ago

Kerala Police arrested Mahindra Hashba Yadav, a man who stole 240 grams of gold from a jewelry store in Muvattupuzha, Ernakulam district, 18 years ago. The 53-year-old, originally from Mumbai, had been on the run since 2006, after he fled with the gold and also defrauded a close friend of Rs1.5 lakh.

Yadav, who was a trusted goldsmith at the store, had convinced the store owner that he needed the gold for purification, but instead took it and disappeared with his family. Along with the stolen gold, he also borrowed a large sum of money from a friend, using his position of trust. The police investigation stalled in 2009 when they couldn’t locate him, and the case was closed.

However, in 2023, under the supervision of Vaibhav Saxena, the Ernakulam district police reopened the case, using modern forensic methods. After weeks of surveillance and tips, Yadav was located in Mumbai, where he had been running a jewelry store on the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road.

A four-member team from Muvattupuzha police conducted a daring operation to apprehend him, successfully bringing him back to Kochi for further investigation.
