A 71-year-old man was fatally shot outside a Fort Worth bingo hall after confronting a man who was allegedly stealing from his truck. The suspect, Kenyan Buchanan, has since been arrested and charged with capital murder.

Roger Smith was leaving the bingo hall early on New Year’s Day when he noticed Buchanan allegedly stealing from his vehicle. The two men confronted each other, and during the altercation, Buchanan shot Smith before fleeing the scene with Smith’s wallet and phone.

A witness saw Smith collapse on the ground, and Buchanan quickly left the area in a white SUV. Police soon initiated a search for the suspect’s vehicle. On Friday, Fort Worth police stopped a white Mazda matching the description of the suspect’s car. Inside, they found Buchanan and a passenger.

Reports state Buchanan had altered his appearance by cutting his hair after the shooting. He had reportedly learned of Smith’s death through media coverage. Buchanan was arrested and taken to Tarrant County Jail, where he was booked on charges of capital murder.

The tragic incident is under investigation as authorities work to bring justice to Smith’s family.
