Keiran Hunt Jailed 13 Years for Cyclist’s Death in Leeds Crash

A courier has been jailed for 13 years after causing the death of a cyclist in Leeds by dangerous driving and then burning his car to destroy evidence.

Keiran Hunt, 37, was driving at nearly 100mph on Ridge Road in Micklefield on April 28 when his vehicle collided with the bike ridden by John Shelton, 48, from Astley, Greater Manchester. The impact threw Shelton into the air, causing catastrophic injuries that led to his death at the scene.

Following the collision, Hunt fled and drove to Chapeltown, where he arranged for his car to be set ablaze in an effort to hide evidence. Police later confirmed his presence at both locations using a tracker fitted to his car by his employer.

At Leeds Crown Court, Hunt admitted causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. He has a prior record of 24 offences, including dangerous driving and drug supply.

John Shelton had borrowed a mountain bike to test a walkie talkie with colleagues at his workplace, Balfour Beatty. He was cycling on the correct side of the road, wearing high-visibility trousers and a headset.

During sentencing, Shelton’s wife, Lucy Masters, described the devastating impact of his death on their family, especially their five-year-old son. She spoke emotionally about the loss and the life they had built together.

Hunt’s defence lawyer noted his client’s “genuine remorse” and a personal apology letter to Shelton’s family but acknowledged the severity of the sentence.

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy from West Yorkshire Police emphasized the tragic consequences of speeding and the irreversible loss caused by Hunt’s actions. He expressed hope that the sentence serves as a warning against reckless driving.
