The Kalyan Bazarpeth police have arrested Shakil Shaikh, a 25-year-old man from Beed district, Maharashtra, for allegedly possessing over 12 kg of ganja, which he intended to sell in Kalyan city. The arrest occurred on Friday, after the police received a tip-off about Shaikh’s illegal activity.
A patrolling team, led by Police Constable Prahalad Chaudhary, was on duty when they were alerted to a suspect who was about to enter the city to sell ganja. Acting on the information, the police formed a team and set up a blockade in the Govindwadi area of Kalyan. Shaikh was spotted roaming in the area and was detained. During the search, police discovered the drugs in his possession.
An FIR was registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and he was presented in court, where he was remanded into police custody for further investigation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Kalyan, Ghete, explained that the police had set up the blockade due to the Holi festival and had laid a trap based on the information they received. Further investigations revealed that Shaikh had procured the ganja from Beed and brought it to Kalyan to sell. The police are now working to identify the recipient of the drugs and continue their investigation.
