Junior Cashier Omkumar Shukla Arrested for Rs 1.98 Crore Gold Theft

A junior cashier at a jewellery store near Shivranjani Crossroads has been booked for allegedly stealing gold worth Rs 1.98 crore over several months. Omkumar Shukla, who has been employed at Harit Zaveri Jewellers since June 2024, was accused of the theft, and a case was registered by Satellite police on Monday.

The complaint was filed by Asifkhan Pathan, a vigilance officer at RBZ Jewellers, who was responsible for overseeing operations at Harit Zaveri Jewellers. Suspicion arose on January 29 when the store manager, Safil Mir, noticed a discrepancy of around 137 grams of gold during a routine stock check.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage from January 24, it was revealed that Shukla had discreetly pocketed a gold bangle while assisting a customer. Further investigation uncovered that Shukla had been systematically stealing gold jewellery for several months by manipulating the store’s Ornet Accounting Software.

Shukla’s method involved generating fake customer bills, removing specific gold item entries from the system after printing the bills, and then pocketing the stolen jewellery. To cover up the theft, he later re-entered the items into the software, making it difficult for management to detect the missing gold.

After Shukla failed to report to work on January 29, the company contacted his family and traced him to his hometown in Gonda district, Uttar Pradesh. Shukla was brought back to Ahmedabad, where he confessed to stealing approximately 2,515.69 grams of gold, valued at Rs 1.98 crore, between October 2024 and January 2025.

During questioning, Shukla admitted to selling part of the stolen gold and spending a portion of the money on online gaming. Authorities recovered Rs 22.5 lakh in cash from his possession in the presence of his parents. Based on the complaint, Satellite police registered a case against Shukla for theft by an employee and under the Information Technology Act for tampering with the accounting software.
