Juan Fuentes and Anthony Linarez-Varrios Arrested After Car Chase

Two men, Juan Carlos Fuentes, 19, and Anthony Linarez-Varrios, 21, were arrested early Sunday morning in North Oakland after leading Berkeley police on a brief chase in a stolen car. Police had been investigating a report of suspicious activity in South Berkeley when they found a gray Toyota Prius with a missing catalytic converter. Witnesses reported that three people fled the scene in a dark gray Infiniti.

As police tracked the Infiniti, they saw it crash near 60th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way while the driver attempted to evade capture. The car, which had been stolen from South San Francisco, contained multiple catalytic converters. Officers quickly set up a perimeter and began searching the area.

Fuentes and Linarez-Varrios were spotted walking on 59th Street toward MLK and were arrested without incident. The men were booked on multiple charges, including vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and burglary tools. Fuentes faces additional charges for driving on the wrong side of the road while evading police.

Both men, who are from Stockton and San Francisco, are being held on bail of $300,000 for Fuentes and $255,000 for Linarez-Varrios. They are scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday. Neither man has a prior criminal record in Alameda County, according to court records.
