A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murder of Michael Ryan, a 51-year-old father of two, who died following a stabbing in Finglas, Dublin, on Thursday.
Ryan, who lived on Carton Road in Poppintree, was found with severe injuries at around 12:30am on Thursday on Hampton Wood Way, St Margaret’s Road. He was rushed to the Mater Hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.
Joseph Lawlor, 38, of Hampton Wood Road, Finglas, appeared before Judge John Hughes at Dublin District Court on Saturday morning. Lawlor had been arrested by Gardaí in Finglas on Friday and was formally charged with Ryan’s murder.
During the court hearing, Lawlor, dressed in a navy sweater, grey tracksuit bottoms, and black shoes, stood silently with his hands clasped. Garda Shane Gallagher confirmed that Lawlor was charged at 5:17pm on Friday and did not respond to the charge.
Since the District Court does not have jurisdiction over bail in murder cases, Lawlor was remanded in custody. Defence counsel Kevin McCrave requested that Lawlor appear in person at the next hearing, which is scheduled for Friday at Cloverhill District Court.
Judge Hughes granted legal aid, acknowledging that Lawlor was unemployed and receiving social welfare benefits. The case will be adjourned for the Director of Public Prosecutions’ directions, and Lawlor is scheduled to appear again on June 28th.
