Jonesboro Girls’ Basketball Coach Arrested After Fight at Game

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – A Jonesboro girls’ basketball coach is facing legal charges following an altercation at an away game on Dec. 9, 2023.

36-year-old Indoneshia Renea Haynes, the coach for Annie Camp Junior High School’s girls’ basketball team, was arrested and booked into the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office on charges of third-degree battery. Haynes, who is being held on a $1,205 bond, is awaiting her first court appearance.

The incident occurred after a fight broke out during the game between Annie Camp and Blytheville. According to online records, a video emerged showing an Annie Camp player throwing a ball at a Blytheville player, escalating into a physical confrontation between the players. The situation quickly turned into a larger altercation, involving adults from both teams.

In response to the incident, Jonesboro Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kim Wilbanks issued a statement, expressing that the district takes allegations of inappropriate conduct seriously and is conducting a thorough investigation. Due to Arkansas law protecting employees, the district could not provide additional comments at the time.

Similarly, Blytheville’s Interim Superintendent Jennifer Blankenship commented, acknowledging the incident and confirming that the district is fully cooperating with local law enforcement. The district emphasized its commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for everyone involved.

While some online discussions centered around who started the altercation, opinions about Haynes’ involvement were mixed. Some residents, like Celina Mendoza from Jonesboro, expressed support for the coach, stating that Haynes was defending herself during the incident. Others, such as George Howard from Blytheville, felt the coach should face consequences for her actions but did not believe she should lose her job.

As for the students involved in the incident, opinions varied on appropriate disciplinary measures, ranging from suspension to expulsion.

The investigation is ongoing, and K8 News will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
