“John Patrick Furey Arrested for Attempted Theft at Walmart in California, MD”

John Patrick Furey, 43, who is currently homeless, was arrested and charged with attempted theft after attempting to steal $481.54 worth of merchandise from the Walmart located on Miramar Way in California, Maryland. The incident took place on December 9, 2024, when Furey allegedly filled a cart and backpack with various unpaid items, including a Razor Black Label E100 electric scooter, toiletries, electronics, and household goods.

Deputy Aaron Ocasio investigated the case after Walmart employees reported seeing Furey enter the store around 6:00 p.m., initially pushing an empty cart. Surveillance footage later confirmed he was placing items in the cart and backpack as he moved through the store. Furey attempted to leave the store with the merchandise, presenting a fraudulent receipt from another store. When an employee identified the receipt as invalid, Furey abandoned the cart and fled, leaving all stolen items behind.

Furey was identified after an anonymous tip matched surveillance footage with his Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration photo. Authorities learned he was homeless, lacking a fixed address. He was formally charged with attempted theft under Maryland law, a misdemeanor involving property valued between $100 and $1,500.

Furey is scheduled to appear in St. Mary’s County District Court for a preliminary inquiry on February 14, 2025.
