A 24-year-old man, John Netti, has pleaded guilty to felony attempted murder for attacking a woman who was walking her dog in Sennett, NY. He is expected to be sentenced to five years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
The Attack & Arrest
On February 2, 2024, just before 9:00 a.m., Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Rockingham Road after reports of a woman being assaulted.
Authorities say Netti parked a dump trailer on the roadside, approached the victim, and began strangling her as she tried to escape. A neighbor witnessed the attack, shouted at Netti, and called 911, prompting him to flee into Highland Golf Course.
Deputies, along with Auburn Police, searched the area and arrested Netti. Investigators confirmed that Netti had no prior connection to the victim.
Mental Health & Legal Proceedings
Two psychiatrists previously determined that Netti was not mentally competent to stand trial, leading to his placement in a secure mental health facility in 2023.
Following his guilty plea, Netti is scheduled to be sentenced on May 1, 2024.
