Montgomery County, OH (February 9, 2025) — A couple was arrested on theft charges following a dramatic police chase through Montgomery County on February 5, 2025. According to Englewood Police, officers were called to the Meijer store located at 9200 N Main Street around 2 p.m. on reports of two shoplifters. The suspects were identified as John Hendricks, 32, of Hartford City, IN, and his wife, Sydney Hendricks, 25.
While detained by officers on suspicion of theft, John Hendricks managed to flee on foot. He got into a Ford Focus and led authorities on a high-speed chase through the area, recklessly driving on State Route 48. Englewood dispatchers used surveillance cameras to track the car’s movements, which eventually led them to a motel parking lot on Rockridge Road.
John Hendricks abandoned the vehicle and fled into a wooded area, but officers from the Clayton Police Department, Clay Township Police Department, and Butler Township Police Department K9 unit assisted Englewood officers in tracking him down. About an hour and 15 minutes later, Hendricks was found along eastbound Interstate 70, west of Taywood Road.
Both John and his wife, Sydney, were arrested and booked into the Montgomery County Jail on theft charges. In addition to theft, John Hendricks faces charges of failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer and resisting arrest. He remains in jail on a $50,000 bond, while Sydney Hendricks is being held on an out-of-state arrest warrant.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to follow up on any further details related to the theft and subsequent chase.
