Two people from Silver Springs were arrested Wednesday following the discovery of dozens of neglected animals on their property. According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, John Comellas and Kimberly Comellas now face 133 counts of animal cruelty after a search warrant revealed poor conditions for the animals in their care.
Sheriff’s deputies, along with animal control officers, found 74 animals on the Comellas’ property, including horses, goats, dogs, a peacock, and an owl. Many of the animals were malnourished, wounded, or near death, with one severely injured horse needing to be euthanized.
In addition to the animal cruelty charges, the Comellas couple was cited for violating local laws related to the number of dogs allowed, failure to license the animals, and not immunizing them.
The animals rescued from the property have been taken in by authorities for rehabilitation and care. Both John and Kimberly Comellas’ bail was set at $135,205 each.
