Joe Lopez Arrested for 14th Time in New Hartford for Retail Theft

The New Hartford Police Department is continuing its crackdown on criminal activity, especially targeting habitual offenders. One such individual, Joe Lopez, a 41-year-old Utica resident, was arrested for the 14th time after committing yet another retail theft.

Lopez, who has a lengthy criminal record with charges including drugs, theft, and falsifying business records, was apprehended following a larceny incident at Home Depot on January 21. Police say Lopez, along with his alleged accomplice, 53-year-old Erin Holden of Utica, stole more than $500 worth of merchandise from the store. This theft added to Lopez’s extensive list of prior charges, with 13 active warrants already outstanding against him from the New Hartford Police Department.

An investigation into the incident revealed Lopez’s previous thefts at various businesses, including Kohl’s, TJ Maxx, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and other Home Depot locations. In total, the stolen merchandise amounted to more than $1,000, leading to charges of Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree under a new law aimed at curbing organized retail theft.

Lopez faces 14 counts of Petit Larceny and Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree, a felony charge triggered by the significant value of the stolen goods. After his arrest, Lopez was taken to the Centralized Arraignment Court for processing, where he will answer the charges against him.

Erin Holden, Lopez’s alleged accomplice, was issued an Appearance Ticket and is scheduled to appear in New Hartford Local Criminal Court in February 2025.
