A woman and her lover were arrested on Monday night by the Chowk Bazaar police in Surat for allegedly stealing Rs 70.5 lakh from her landlord. The accused, Jayshree Bhagat (26) and Shubham Nishad (25), were taken into custody after the theft, which occurred after Jayshree had promised her landlord, Dilip Ukani, marriage.
According to police reports, Ukani, a Surat resident, had recently sold one of his properties on January 23 and received Rs 96.44 lakh in cash. He kept the money in his flat. Jayshree, who had rented another flat from Ukani, was living with her two children after separating from her husband, Dinesh Bhagat. The couple allegedly took advantage of Ukani’s trust, and after promising marriage, stole a significant amount of his cash.
The police acted quickly upon receiving Ukani’s complaint and arrested the couple. They were brought before the Surat district court, where they were remanded to police custody until February 23 for further investigation.
The authorities are continuing their probe into the case to gather more evidence and potentially arrest other individuals involved in the crime.
