Inmate John Matthew Nigh Escapes Craven County Jail, On the Run

Authorities are actively searching for John Matthew Nigh, a 37-year-old inmate who escaped from the Craven County Jail on Sunday afternoon, January 28, 2025. Nigh was being held in connection with multiple charges across several counties and was last seen at approximately 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, Nigh, along with the assistance of his two cellmates, removed a ceiling grating in their cell, crawled into a utility ceiling chase, and exited through a ventilation housing on the roof. To cover up his disappearance, the inmates allegedly stuffed a mattress in a way that made it appear as if Nigh was still asleep in his cell.

Once the escape was discovered, a statewide BOLO (Be On the Lookout) was issued for Nigh. The Craven County Investigations Bureau and Special Investigations Bureau Deputies have begun an extensive investigation and search for Nigh, with support from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Officials are warning that Nigh has previously been armed during encounters with law enforcement and should be considered dangerous.

Nigh is described as a white male, standing 6’2″ and weighing 190 lbs, with tattoos that include “JMN” on his upper left arm and a cross on his upper right arm.

Pending Charges and Court Dates

Nigh had several pending court dates across three counties, including:

Craven County (District Court on 3/18/2025 and Superior Court on 4/29/2025):

Multiple charges including assault on law enforcement, felony possession of a controlled substance, and resisting public officers.

Search Efforts and Warnings

Authorities urge anyone with information on Nigh’s whereabouts to immediately contact the Craven County Sheriff’s Office at 252-633-2357 or call 911. Due to Nigh’s violent history, he should not be approached directly. Law enforcement officials continue to work diligently on locating and capturing the fugitive.

The public is reminded that Nigh should be considered dangerous and should be reported to local authorities immediately if seen.
