Two days after a newlywed woman was found dead at her in-laws’ home in Palode, Thiruvananthapuram district, her husband and his friend were arrested on charges of abetting her suicide, physical and mental harassment, and domestic violence.
The arrested individuals were identified as Abhijith Devan DP (25) and his friend Ajas TA (26).
According to a senior officer from the Palode police, the woman, a nurse, died by suicide on December 6 at her husband’s home. Initially, a case of unnatural death was registered, but further investigation revealed frequent arguments between Abhijith and his wife, during which he made severe criticisms of her family and friends.
The officer added that there was significant evidence pointing to severe physical and mental harassment by Abhijith and his friend Ajas, which led to the woman’s tragic decision to take her life.
Police also revealed that the woman, who belonged to the tribal community, had been in a love marriage with Abhijith, an upper-caste man. Tensions related to their caste differences reportedly fueled ongoing friction between the couple.
