Henry Remington Herod, 42, of Minneapolis, and Matthew McDowell, 44, of Port Allen, Louisiana, face serious charges for conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and making false tax claims, totaling over $3 million in fraudulent refunds.
Between April 2022 and May 2023, the pair allegedly prepared and filed false tax returns that included fake employment, income, and tax credit claims. They submitted 115 false returns, wrongfully claiming approximately $3,032,839 in refunds.
Herod allegedly filed returns for the 2021 tax year, claiming COVID-19-related sick leave tax credits, and both men are accused of submitting false claims for 2022 related to fuel tax credits.
Herod faces additional charges for making false claims. Both men were released under conditions and will face further proceedings in court.
