Hemant Kumar Gogoi Arrested in ₹65 Lakh Loan Scam in Assam

In a major breakthrough, Hemant Kumar Gogoi was arrested in Guwahati on Wednesday, accused of orchestrating a large-scale loan scam that defrauded vulnerable individuals in Assam’s Barak Valley. The scam, which has caused financial losses amounting to approximately Rs65 lakh, was uncovered following a police investigation prompted by a tip-off.

Gogoi, believed to be the mastermind behind the operation, allegedly used the Singhania Fintech Acquisition Company to lure victims. The scam primarily targeted individuals across three districts—Karimganj, Silchar, and Hailakandi—offering fake loans of Rs25,000 for an upfront payment of Rs2,000.

The arrest follows the earlier detention of three other accused individuals, including a local BJP leader and an officer in charge, further expanding the scope of the investigation. Authorities seized crucial documents during the raid, unraveling the widespread fraud network operating in the region.

Police have registered multiple cases against Gogoi in both Assam and Meghalaya, suggesting that the scam may have extended beyond the Barak Valley. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities working to identify additional individuals involved in the scheme.
