Hashiru Baku, the alleged mastermind behind the brutal murder of Brigadier General Harold Udokwere (retd.), has been apprehended by the police. The arrest occurred after Baku attempted to flee the country.
The murder occurred on June 21, when armed robbers invaded the late general’s residence at Sunshine Estate, Abuja, during the early hours of the morning. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner, Benneth Igweh, had previously paraded the suspects involved in the crime, identifying Ibrahim Rabiu, Nafiu Jamil, Aliyu Abdullahi, and Mohammed Nuhu, all residents of the Apo area in Abuja.
The police arrested these individuals after receiving credible intelligence, which led them to their hideout. During questioning, the suspects confessed to the murder, revealing that they had stabbed the late general when he attempted to resist them from taking his pistol. Authorities also recovered the knife allegedly used in the crime, along with the general’s phone.
Despite the arrest of the primary suspects, two robbers remain at large, along with the deceased’s stolen pistol. Efforts are ongoing to capture these individuals.
On Monday, CP Igweh provided an update, announcing the arrest of Baku, who was located in Kano State while attempting to flee the country. Baku, who had previously escaped during the Kuje Correctional Centre attack, is believed to have orchestrated the robbery and murder. In addition to the general’s pistol, authorities also recovered the deceased’s wristwatch and his wife’s stolen jewelry.
The police also discovered drugs in Baku’s residence, indicating that he and his accomplices may have been under the influence during the commission of the crime. Baku is now in police custody, and investigations continue.
