Hanover Man Charged with Stealing $22,600 from Employer

A Hanover man, 20-year-old Ethan J. Markel, has been charged with stealing $22,600 from his employer in northern York County. Markel faces multiple charges, including forgery, theft by unlawful taking, and identity theft, according to court records.

The investigation began in October when state police were called to a roofing business in Warrington Township regarding stolen checks. The business’s co-owner and accountant noticed suspicious transactions while reviewing a bank statement and believed the checks had been taken while she was away from her office.

State police obtained copies of five fraudulent checks made out to Markel, one of which had a forged signature. A comparison of the handwriting on the checks with Markel’s timecard revealed a match, further linking him to the crime. Upon executing a search warrant for Markel’s bank account, investigators discovered the checks had been deposited, totaling $22,600.

Markel has been released on $25,000 unsecured bail. His attorney, Ronald Gross, has not yet commented on the case.
