Guwahati Police Arrest Two for Attempted Theft, Injured Thief Escapes

n a swift response, the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD), stationed at the Fatasil Ambari Police Station, arrested two individuals who were caught attempting to steal iron rods from the construction site of the Birubari Flyover. The suspects, Biki Das (22) and Shyam Sundar Barman (27), were apprehended after the police seized an autorickshaw and about 40 kilograms of stolen iron rods from their possession.

The arrested individuals remain in police custody, and further investigations are underway. Authorities have made it clear that they will take strict legal action against the perpetrators involved in the theft.

In a separate incident, a thief’s escape attempt in Garbhanga, Guwahati, led to his injury. Jaydeb Mazumdar, a habitual offender with a history of thefts, including mobile phone thefts and chain snatching, tried to escape police custody during a crime scene recreation. He pretended to feel unwell, seized a police officer’s pistol, and attempted to flee.

To prevent his escape, police were forced to fire at Mazumdar, injuring him in the leg. He was initially treated at a local hospital and later transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. The shooting was deemed necessary due to the imminent threat posed by Mazumdar’s actions.

Mazumdar’s long criminal record includes several registered cases of burglary and theft.
