Guwahati Police have arrested five individuals allegedly involved in a statewide vehicle theft operation. The Crime Branch, acting on specific intelligence, apprehended the suspects after a detailed investigation.
The five arrested gang members have been identified as Raju Das and Montu Barman from Nalbari, Junmoni Deka from Baksa, Raju Deka from Barpeta, and Jayanta Haloi from Noonmati, Guwahati. The gang had been stealing vehicles for several years, primarily targeting parked cars in public spaces where owners were absent.
Authorities believe this gang’s criminal activities extended beyond Assam, possibly including other parts of Northeast India. Investigations are ongoing to determine any cross-border links.
This operation follows a significant bust last month by Dispur Police, who uncovered another major car theft racket operating between Assam and Manipur. The previous case involved a gang led by Rustam Ali, Inamul Ali, and Ali Akbar, who targeted luxury vehicles in Dispur’s Christian Basti area and sold them at a reduced price to buyers from Manipur.
Both operations underscore the growing issue of vehicle theft and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat these criminal activities in the region.
