Gurugram Police Arrest Telecom Employees for Fraud Scheme

The Gurugram Police in Haryana, aided by the Indian Cyber Coordination Centre (I4C), have arrested two employees of a leading telecom company for their involvement in a scam that targeted people via WhatsApp and Telegram. The accused allegedly provided virtual numbers to Indonesian and Chinese fraudsters, who used them to cheat victims in the name of part-time jobs and investment schemes.

The arrested individuals, Neeraj Walia, a resident of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, and Hemant Sharma, were nabbed on Thursday following a detailed technical analysis by the Cyber Crime Unit of Gurugram Police. The investigation began after a complaint from a victim who had been offered a part-time job posting reviews of hotels. The victim was paid small amounts initially, but later coaxed into transferring more money under the guise of investment in these tasks.

During interrogation, it was revealed that Neeraj Walia, who worked as a site verifier for the telecom company, and Hemant Sharma, his team leader, had issued landline numbers used by the fraudsters. These numbers were registered under the name of a non-existent company, Ekamdarsh Services Pvt Ltd, violating TRAI regulations. The fraudsters used these numbers to trick victims into transferring money for supposed investments, generating large profits.

The police also discovered that the accused had provided additional virtual numbers to an Indonesian operator involved in the scam. Two mobile phones used in the fraud were recovered during the operation.

Further investigation is ongoing, and the accused are being held on police remand for intensive questioning.
