In a major crackdown, the Government Railway Police (GRP) along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) successfully detained a gang of interstate drug smugglers at Agartala Railway Station. The operation resulted in the seizure of 15,000 bottles of the contraband cough syrup, Eskuf, valued at Rs. 25 lakh.
According to Tapash Das, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the GRP at Agartala Railway Station, the bust followed a tip-off from an intelligence source. A trap was set for a long-distance train arriving from other states. Upon conducting a search of 50 bags belonging to the passengers, police recovered the illicit bottles of Eskuf syrup.
The detained individuals included nine members of the drug gang, with two hailing from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The suspects were identified as Amit Kumar Srivastav (30), from West Champaran, Bihar; Chintu Yadav (23), from Balia, Uttar Pradesh; and seven others from different areas of Tripura, including Suman Miah (24), Chutan Deb (36), Aktar Hossain (24), Rajib Sutradhar (37), Majarul Islam (35), Chan Miah (54), and Prasenjit Das (23).
Following their arrest, the suspects were presented before a local court. The police have filed a case under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985 and have requested police remand for further interrogation.
OC Tapash Das expressed optimism that the arrest of these nine individuals would help authorities track down and apprehend other members of the interstate drug smuggling ring involved in the illicit trade.
