Gregor Haas, Father of Payne Haas, Arrested in Philippines

ISLAMABAD: Gregor Johann Haas, the father of Brisbane Broncos player Payne Haas, has been arrested in the Philippines on charges of drug trafficking. The 46-year-old Haas is accused of smuggling over 5 kilograms of methamphetamine into Indonesia in December 2023. He was apprehended in Cebu City on Wednesday and is currently being held in Manila.

Indonesian authorities, including the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), have requested Haas’ extradition, stating that he is linked to a Mexican drug cartel. Haas allegedly used a fake identity to escape Indonesia, where authorities seized the drugs he had attempted to send. The Indonesian authorities have confirmed they are working with other nations, including Australia, to investigate the international drug network in which Haas is implicated.

In response to the arrest, Australian Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers assured that the government would provide consular assistance to Haas. Speaking about the impact on his son, Broncos coach Kevin Walters expressed full support for Payne Haas during this challenging time. He praised Payne’s integrity and strength, describing him as a dedicated family man.

Payne Haas, who had been instrumental in the Broncos’ victory over Manly, continues to receive strong support from his teammates, including close friend and teammate Pat Carrigan, who emphasized his resilience and caring nature.

This arrest has placed further attention on the Haas family, with the investigation continuing into the significant drug trafficking operation.
