Greater Noida Police Arrest Cyber Fraudster Posing as Financier

The Bisrakh police in Greater Noida arrested a cyber fraudster on Tuesday who allegedly forged documents to impersonate a representative of a private finance service provider, defrauding numerous insurance policyholders out of lakhs of rupees. The accused, identified as Amit Sharma, reportedly obtained stolen data of over 19,000 individuals from a previous employer.

Amit was apprehended at a cybercafé he operated under false pretenses to facilitate his fraudulent activities. Police learned about his ongoing crimes through a tip-off.

According to Shakti Mohan Awasthi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Central Noida, Amit had limited education and had previously worked at a private insurance company. He illicitly accessed and misused customer data, contacting policyholders while posing as a legitimate representative offering policy renewals or closures. He convinced victims to transfer money to his accounts via digital payment methods, utilizing a fake ID obtained online.

Authorities seized a mobile phone used for his fraudulent activities, two central processing units (CPUs), a laptop, a biometric machine, and forged documents.

A case has been registered against Amit under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, including cheating and forgery.
