On Thursday, August 22, 2024, Ghaziabad Police arrested Dr. Abdur Rahman, 42, following accusations from his wife’s family that he had “deceived” her by converting to Hinduism under false pretenses. Rahman had married his colleague in an Arya Samaj temple six years ago. However, the woman’s family now claims that his conversion to Hinduism was done solely to manipulate her into marriage.
The police charged Rahman under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, which criminalizes conversions made by coercion or deceit. This arrest highlights the ongoing concerns related to the application of the state’s anti-conversion laws, designed to prevent deceptive religious conversions.
