Funeral Agency Owner Detained for Fictitious Cremations in Plovdiv

The owner of a funeral agency in Plovdiv has been detained on suspicion of fraud, following allegations of conducting fictitious cremations in exchange for fees. The man was taken into custody at the Sixth RU for up to 24 hours as initial investigations revealed evidence pointing to fraudulent practices.

During the investigation, two cases of such fictitious cremations were confirmed, and authorities continue to work under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Plovdiv, as reported by BTV.

This incident mirrors a similar case that occurred in the capital. Georgi Enev, a funeral agent in Sofia, was accused of conducting 20 fictitious cremations. Enev passed away in September, but prior to his death, he faced charges for defrauding 19 people in Sofia and Bankia over a period of five months in 2022.

Enev reportedly handed empty urns to the families of the deceased. Disturbingly, the remains of 12 individuals, who were supposed to have been cremated, were later found buried in a forest near the Bankya cemetery.
