Four Venezuelan Migrants Charged in Oak Brook Theft Incident

OAK BROOK, Ill. – Four Venezuelan migrants have been arrested and face multiple charges after allegedly stealing nearly $5,000 worth of sunglasses from the Oak Brook Sunglass Hut on Monday. The suspects, Jaidera Rincon-Jaramillo (24), Jonamer Barrios-Moreno (28), Gregory Mendoza-Rivas (25), and David Vivas-Esis (21), were charged with burglary, robbery, and retail theft. Rincon-Jaramillo and Barrios-Moreno are also charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when Oak Brook police officers observed suspicious activity involving a silver Ford Fusion in the mall parking lot. Surveillance revealed three of the suspects, later identified as Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno, and Vivas-Esis, entering the Sunglass Hut store with an unidentified accomplice.

Inside the store, the suspects selected 13 pairs of sunglasses valued at approximately $4,960. They attempted to leave the store without paying, resulting in a brief struggle with an employee, whom they allegedly pulled to the ground before fleeing. The suspects returned to their vehicle, with their accomplice fleeing into the mall.

As officers responded with emergency lights and sirens, Rincon-Jaramillo, the driver, led authorities on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of up to 93 mph. The suspects ultimately exited onto I-290 before being apprehended after officers deployed spike strips. The vehicle stopped on Harrison Street, where all four suspects were taken into custody.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin condemned the suspects’ actions, highlighting the risk posed to the public by their behavior. “This type of behavior that puts the general public as well as innocent motorists at risk will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin stated.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to address the criminal acts and hold those responsible accountable.
