Four Newark Men Charged in Violent Home Invasion and Carjacking

Union Township, N.J. (FOX26) — Union Township police have charged four men in connection to a violent home invasion and carjacking that took place in September.

According to authorities, the crime occurred on the morning of Sept. 20 when Asim Key (20), Altamir Thornton (22), Yashir Phillips (19), and Rahiem Maldonado (22)—all from Newark—forcefully entered the home of an elderly couple. Police say the victims were beaten and robbed during the invasion.

The suspects stole the keys to a luxury vehicle parked in the driveway, officials report. Police also noted that the group was involved in several other burglaries across the state that took place the night before this incident.

The four men face multiple charges, including carjacking, burglary, and aggravated assault. Maldonado, Thornton, and Phillips are currently being held at the Bergen County Jail on unrelated charges, while Key is being held at the Essex County Jail, according to officials.
