College Station, TX (WBMA) — Jeffrey Simpson, a 62-year-old man from Burleson, was arrested after using an altered driver’s license to purchase a $101,000 Corvette from a College Station dealership. Simpson is facing charges of felony theft and fraudulent use of identifying information following the deceptive transaction.
The incident, which began in March 2023, was reported by the dealership after discovering that the car had been purchased with stolen identity information. The car was delivered to Burleson four days after the deal was finalized.
According to the College Station Police Department (CSPD) arrest report, the 65-year-old victim was notified by a credit monitoring company that his personal information had been used to apply for a car loan. The victim later provided the dealership with a copy of his driver’s license, which revealed a discrepancy: while the license matched the victim’s name, birth date, and address, the photo on the license showed a Black man, not the White man whose identity had been stolen.
The suspect had also used the victim’s Social Security number in the online loan application, further linking the stolen identity to the fraudulent purchase.
The CSPD detective, assisted by the Tarrant Regional Auto Crimes Task Force, identified Simpson as the suspect. A task force investigator contacted Simpson, who led officers to the parking lot of an apartment complex in Fort Worth, where the stolen Corvette was recovered.
Simpson was arrested on March 11 and remains in the Brazos County Jail. In addition to the charges filed by CSPD, Simpson faces warrants for similar charges in Grayson and Lamar counties, located near the Oklahoma border. His total bond is set at $185,000 across all charges.
