Fort Lauderdale Couple’s Murder: Granddaughter’s Boyfriend Arrested

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the double murder of an elderly Fort Lauderdale couple. Maurice Anthony Newson, an on-and-off boyfriend of the couple’s granddaughter, was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 28, 2024, and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of robbery with a firearm.

Newson, who was already arrested in May for stealing Major and Claudette Melvin’s 2014 red Ford Fusion after their deaths, had been trying to sell the stolen car, police said. He had previously faced charges for motor vehicle theft and dealing in stolen property related to the car.

Neighbors expressed relief following the arrest. Tommy Lavelle, who had known the Melvins for 25 years, shared his thoughts on the tragic loss. “They were nice people, and I hated to see somebody get away with that,” he said. Dennis Parker, the couple’s son, described their deaths as a tragedy, remembering how his parents had welcomed Newson into their home with kindness.

The Melvins, Major (89) and Claudette (87), were found shot to death in their Melrose Park home on the night of March 22. Police responded to a death investigation call around 8:47 p.m. and discovered the couple’s bodies. Major was found in the living room, and Claudette was in the dining room, both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. However, no firearms were found at the scene.

Family members confirmed that the Melvins’ car and keys were missing from their home. Police soon learned that the couple’s red Ford Fusion had been stolen, and a surveillance camera recorded an unidentified man near the Melvins’ home shortly before the crime took place.

Investigators traced the stolen car through SunPass toll data, leading them to connect the theft with the double murder. Court documents revealed further evidence, including blood stains and weapons discovered in Newson’s apartment, strengthening the case against him.

While Newson’s motives remain unclear, authorities continue to gather evidence. As of now, the Melvins’ granddaughter has not been charged in connection with the murders.

Dennis Parker voiced his anger towards the situation: “If Newson did commit the murder, I hope he rots in hell.” He expressed further frustration that his family had to endure such a tragedy.

Maurice Newson remains in custody, awaiting extradition to face charges in Fort Lauderdale.
